I have been so excited to reveal this space and today is the day. The little girls room at our Patricia Project can only be described as “whimsy meets timeless charm”. This truly is a dream space for the most special little girls to grow up in and I am thrilled to be walking you through it today.
This space was designed with a sense of wonder in mind, yet curated with timeless details. When our clients engaged us, they wanted us to design a space for their two little girls- a space where they could create cherished memories while also growing into it over time. It was designed with joyful play, and enduring charm and functionality in mind. Every detail was chosen to evoke a sense of creativity and imagination – something we believe is so important for kids spaces.
For Rosie, who is 3, the colour pink was a must have. The entire design began with this absolutely stunning Sanderson wall covering that seamlessly blends this indoor space with nature. We pulled a pink hue from the wallpaper and used it to cover all of the baseboards, window trim and the doors to create depth and a pop of contrast.
When our clients purchased the home, this room had built in storage under one of the windows, which was the perfect opportunity for us to create a little reading nook with lots of cozy pillows, and two floating shelves to hold their current favourite books.
One of my favourite design elements of this space are how many patterns and textures we have layered together. When we are designing kids spaces, the design intent extends far beyond a beautiful space, and pattern and colour play a pivotal role for many reasons. Pattern and colour are proven beneficial to cognitive development and learning – it stimulates creativity and encourages curiosity. Bright colours help children with colour recognition, while dynamic patterns can aid in developing spatial awareness and problem solving skills. These elements have also been linked to emotional well-being in both mood regulation and comfort and familiarity. Repeated patterns or motifs can create a sense of comfort and personal connection to a space while a balanced palette can help set the tone for both play and rest. I could go on and on, but you get the point!
The twin beds tucked under the window are the perfect tone of honey oak, while layers of textured and embroidered bedding in muted shades of sage, taupe and cream add softness.
Between the twin beds, a rattan fronted nightstand brings texture and warmth while lending space for lighting, books and accessories.
In our design process, we emphasize tactile exploration of materials and thoughtful spatial composition. This bedroom showcases these principals beautifully.
Every inch of this space is full of whimsy. The wallpaper draws the eye upwards, enveloping the room in a cozy, story-book like, charm. By continuing the wallpaper across all of the walls and the sloped ceiling we were able to create an immersive design experience – proof yet again that great design is found in the details.
This charming bedroom is a testament to our design philosophy that blending playful touches with elevated craftsmanship will result in a space that inspires imagination while also standing the test of time.
